  • What is the Passing Stage Project?

One year ago – 13 women of the Stage were invited by Ruwanthie de Chickera to look at their experiences of motherhood, through the lens of theatre.

The women selected for the project are women from the Sinhala and English stage in Sri Lanka, who at some point in their lives, were good enough artists to make a career out of it. Women who subsequently married and are now bringing up children. Some of them have left the theatre, never to return. Some of them hope to return. Some of them never left.

For one year they wrote about….

their families, their children, their partners, the education system, Gods, Pediatricians, marriage, truth, forgiveness and of course, always, The Theatre

Now they are in rehearsal ….

A preview of the work in progress - an open house event - is planned for May.

Ruwanthie on THE WOMEN of the project…

I have chosen, for this project, unconventional women.  Before marriage and motherhood, these women have, with considerable ease, been able to be the exception to the standard South Asian woman – in image, lifestyle, pursuits. Because of theatre, all these women have been given the chance to live their lives closer to the truth of … Read more
